NSW Outcomes:

EN2-VOCAB-01 builds knowledge and use of Tier 1, Tier 2 and Tier 3 vocabulary through interacting, wide reading and writing, and by defining and analysing words.

By the end of this unit, students will:

  • Describe how modal words show degrees of probability, occurrence, obligation and inclination (UnT7)
  • Identify and use terminology associated with figurative language when reading and responding to texts (UnT7)
  • Understand and use language features commonly found in digital texts
  • Understand and use word play, including puns and spoonerisms, to interpret and create meaning (CrT1)
  • Apply morphemic knowledge to change word meanings by adding prefixes and suffixes to a base word or root (SpG9)

This resource isn’t just for NSW teachers - it’s fully aligned with the Australian Curriculum Version 9 too! The bundle also includes a complete unit of work with outcomes matched to the Australian Curriculum.

Australian Curriculum Outcomes:

AC9E3LA02 understand how the language of evaluation and emotion, such as modal verbs, can be varied to be more or less forceful

AC9E3LA10 extend topic-specific and technical vocabulary and know that words can have different meanings in different contexts

AC9E4LE02 describe the effects of text structures and language features in literary texts when responding to and sharing opinions

AC9E4LE04 examine the use of literary devices and deliberate word play in literary texts, including poetry, to shape meaning

By the end of this unit, students will:

  • explore how modal verbs; for example, “must”, “might” and “could”, indicate degrees of probability or obligation
  • explore examples of language that demonstrate a range of emotions and positions, and building a vocabulary to express judgements about characters or events; for example, “the wizard was cunning, expert, inventive”
  • extend vocabulary by adding prefixes and suffixes to base words; for example, “different”, “differently” and “difference”
  • share and discussing understanding of the effects of literary techniques on their appreciation of texts
  • define puns, and identifying how they are used by authors to create a sense of freshness, originality and playfulness
