NSW Outcomes:

EN2-REFLU-01 sustains independent reading with accuracy, automaticity, rate and prosody suited to purpose, audience and meaning.

By the end of this unit, students will:

  • Explain how effortless and accurate word reading, at a pace appropriate for text and purpose, supports reading fluency and comprehension
  • Maintain stamina when reading extended texts
  • Demonstrate use of navigation pathways to support fluency when engaging with print, visual and multimodal texts (UnT1)
  • Adjust voice, tone, volume and pitch in response to punctuation to enhance reading fluency and support comprehension (FIY5)
  • Apply appropriate tone to represent characters’ emotions when reading dialogue (FIY5)
  • Recognise different purposes and audiences for reading and adjust reading rate to suit the text’s purpose (FIY5)
  • Reflect on and compare differences between their oral reading fluency and silent reading fluency

  • use phonic knowledge, word knowledge, vocabulary and grammatical knowledge to read unknown words
  • read a wider range of texts from different learning areas, including chapter books and informative texts
  • read increasingly complex texts using established word identification strategies, knowledge of the topic and understanding of text structure and language features
