Unit Description:
This unit develops student knowledge and skills with plotting and translating shapes on a Cartesian plane. Students will extend their understanding of chance and probability by experimenting with probability outcomes and by creating random generators. Students will learn about frequency and sample sizes containing equal and unequal chances.
NSW Outcomes:
MA3-GM-01 locates and describes points on a coordinate plane
MA3-CHAN-01 conducts chance experiments and quantifies the probability
MAO-WM-01 develops understanding and fluency in mathematics through exploring and connecting mathematical concepts, choosing and applying mathematical techniques to solve problems, and communicating their thinking and reasoning coherently and clearly
Fonts:
- An entire teaching slide.
- A simplified unit of work.
- Links to online interactive games to enhance student engagement.
These “load and go” teaching slides have been purposefully created to make maths lesson delivery seamless, engaging, and aligned with the NSW Mathematics Sample Units. Designed in PowerPoint for ease of use but can also be opened and edited in Google Slides.
In edit mode (not slideshow or presentation mode), teachers and students can drag and drop digital manipulatives such as counters, MAB blocks, and other visual tools directly on the screen. These interactive elements act as digital alternatives to physical classroom materials, ideal for schools with limited access to hands-on resources or for teachers who prefer a shared, on-screen model for class demonstrations.
Getting Started
To use these slides in Google Slides:
- Upload the PowerPoint file to Google Drive.
- Open the file, then select File → Save as Google Slides.
- Review the formatting before teaching, as some minor layout changes may occur when converting from PowerPoint to Google Slides.
How to Teach with These Slides
- Use the slides for whole-class explicit instruction, modelling, and guided practice.
- Write, draw, or type directly over the slides to demonstrate concepts, solve problems, or complete shared mathematical tasks.
- Display independent activities for capable students to complete while you work with smaller groups or individuals who need additional support.
- Each presentation includes interactive manipulatives that can be moved freely during lessons, making it easy to demonstrate number concepts, place value, fractions, and other mathematical ideas dynamically.
- Additional online maths games are embedded throughout to provide students with opportunities for practice, exploration, and consolidation. These digital games offer instant feedback and can be used as informal assessment tools to check for understanding and application of key concepts.
- Use them during maths rotations, for fast finishers, extension activities, or as optional homework tasks. If a suggested game does not suit your class, simply delete or skip the slide. It is easier to remove content than to add new material.
- Some games require a paid subscription (for example, Study Ladder), as Australian-based maths resources are limited. These have been included for schools that already have access to these platforms.
- All hyperlinks and media are embedded for instant access, allowing teachers to open resources without searching through documents or managing multiple browser tabs.
- Save your annotated PowerPoint file and return to it anytime. No more lost whiteboard notes or worrying about someone erasing your work. Everything stays exactly where you left it, ready for next time.
