Unit Description:

This unit teaches students to combine and apply their dance and music learning from Creative Arts K–6 by demonstrating freedom in the groove as they compose dance and music performances.

In dance, students explore their groove through sequentially composing a class jazz dance, culminating in a performance. Students collaboratively rehearse and refine dance sequences using the elements of dance to enhance their performance quality. They explore historical and contemporary jazz dance sequences to help inspire ideas for composition. Students reflect on their learning and appreciation for dance through multimodal forms.

In music, students investigate the key features of funk music to explore how it provides freedom for self-expression within musical boundaries. They experiment with creating simple rhythmic and harmonic backing layers to lay a foundation for self-expression through melodic grooves and solos. The unit culminates with students being supported to compose and perform their own funk-inspired songs, using the elements of music to express musical ideas. Students reflect on their learning and acknowledge musical influences by annotating musical ideas using graphic or staff notation.
