EN2-REFLU-01 sustains independent reading with accuracy, automaticity, rate and prosody suited to purpose, audience and meaning.

By the end of this unit, students will:

  • Syllabify, blend grapheme-phoneme correspondences and use morphemic knowledge as strategies for reading words accurately (PKW8)
  • Read multisyllabic words, phrases and continuous texts with accuracy and appropriate rate suited to reading purpose (FIY5, PKW8)
  • Adjust voice, tone, volume and pitch reflected by the punctuation in a text, to enhance reading fluency and support comprehension (FIY5)
  • Reflect on how adjusting reading rate and prosody supports comprehension and can engage an audience
  • Reflect on stamina for reading sustained texts

  • learn the specific speaking or listening skills of different group roles; for example, group leader, note taker and reporter
  • use language appropriately in different situations; for example, explaining a procedure to a group, engaging in a game with friends
  • use phonic knowledge, word knowledge, vocabulary and grammatical knowledge to read unknown words
  • read a wider range of texts from different learning areas, including chapter books and informative texts
  • read increasingly complex texts using established word identification strategies, knowledge of the topic and understanding of text structure and language features
