Unit Description:

This unit teaches students to explore how stories and ideas are communicated through art and performance.

In Drama, students explore how stories can be communicated through drama by using familiar and reimagined fairytales. They develop their understanding of the dramatic elements of role, character, situation, language, space and time. Through improvisation, tableau, movement and dialogue, students embody characters and sequence events to create, rehearse and perform stories. They explore pantomime as a drama tradition from diverse cultural contexts, recognising how exaggerated expression and audience interaction help communicate ideas.

In Visual Arts, students explore ancient and historical artworks, including Chinese woodblock printing, Indian Rangoli and Mandala. They develop their understanding of line, shape, pattern, colour, tone and texture, and how these elements can be organised to create balanced compositions. Through experimenting with printmaking, drawing and painting techniques, students plan, transfer, refine and enhance their artworks over time. They consider how artists from different times and places use materials and techniques to represent ideas and select and display their own artworks for an audience.
