Unit Information:

Curriculum Alignment

This resource directly aligns with:
  • NSW Science Curriculum 2024-2025
  • Australian Curriculum V9

NSW Outcomes:

ST1-SCI-01 measures and describes changes in living things, materials, movement, Earth and the sky
ST1-PQU-01 poses questions based on observations and information to investigate cause and effect
ST1-DAT-01 collects, represents and uses data to identify patterns and relationships

Australian Curriculum V9 Outcomes:

AC9S1U01 identify the basic needs of plants and animals, including air, water, food or shelter, and describe how the places they live meet those needs
AC9S1H01 describe how people use science in their daily lives, including using patterns to make scientific predictions
AC9S1I01 pose questions to explore observed simple patterns and relationships and make predictions based on experiences
AC9S1I02 suggest and follow safe procedures to investigate questions and test predictions
AC9S1I03 make and record observations, including informal measurements, using digital tools as appropriate
AC9S1I04 sort and order data and information and represent patterns, including with provided tables and visual or physical models
AC9S1I05 compare observations with predictions and others’ observations, consider if investigations are fair and identify further questions with guidance
AC9S1I06 write and create texts to communicate observations, findings and ideas, using everyday and scientific vocabulary

Unit Description:

In this ten-lesson unit, students explore how living things depend on the Earth’s systems for energy and survival. Through hands-on investigations, observations, and model-building, students examine how the atmosphere, hydrosphere, lithosphere, and biosphere interact to support life. They investigate how light, water, and soil affect plant growth and how energy moves through food chains.

Students study habitats and ecosystems in rainforests, deserts, and aquatic environments, describing relationships between living and non-living components. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander knowledge of land management, such as cultural burning and resource care, is integrated to show how observation and understanding sustain ecosystems.

The unit concludes with students designing and presenting a model habitat and food chain that demonstrate energy flow and interdependence in living systems.

By the end of the unit, students will be able to:
  • Identify and describe the four systems of the Earth and how they connect.
  • Explain how these systems provide energy and materials for living things.
  • Conduct fair tests and interpret data to describe patterns in plant growth.
  • Describe how energy moves through food chains and ecosystems.
  • Recognise Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander ways of caring for habitats.
  • Present findings using models, diagrams, and scientific explanations.
