Assess Early Stage 1 & Stage 1 outcomes from the NSW Multi Age K-2 Year A Maths Sample Unit of Work 17 with Confidence!

This Differentiated Maths Assessment is designed to align seamlessly with the NSW Maths Sample Units of Work for Multi-Age K-2 Year A, assessing both Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 outcomes. Carefully crafted to support diverse learners, this resource ensures that all students feel capable and engaged while demonstrating their understanding of key mathematical concepts.

Please note: The Early Stage 1 Assessment is not differentiated and only assesses stage-based outcomes.

Key Features:

Early Stage 1 stage-based assessment – Designed to assess outcomes targeted towards kindergarten.

✅ Stage 1 Differentiation – Designed to cater to a range of abilities within a multi-age setting.
Multiple Formats – Includes an editable Word document, PDF version, and a PDF answer key for easy use and marking.
Aligned with NSW Curriculum – Each question is directly linked to the content markers from the assessment opportunities table in the NSW Maths Sample Units of Work.
Comprehensive & Accessible – Ensures all students can complete the assessment at their level while still challenging those ready to extend their understanding with 3 columns of questions for working below, working at and working above stage outcomes.
Clear, Structured Layout – Questions are designed for clarity, helping students demonstrate their reasoning and problem-solving skills effectively.

If the differentiated option isn’t suitable for your students, you can print the base assessment instead, which includes only the ‘at stage’ questions for a more targeted approach.

Perfect for multi-age classrooms, composite classes, and differentiated instruction, this resource helps teachers assess, support, and extend students while staying aligned with the NSW Mathematics curriculum.

As this is a multi age assessment, Early Stage 1 and Stage 1 Assessment pages have been marked with the following icons:
  • The wombat identifies all Early Stage 1 content and assessment. It was chosen as it is an animal that lays low, walks the ground symbolising laying the groundwork or foundations of Literacy. Therefore, Early Stage 1 concepts will be identified by the Wombat.
  • The kangaroo identifies all Stage 1 content and assessment. It was chosen as it is an animal that jumps to new heights. It still relies on the ground to travel, but leaps and bounds forwards, extending on what they know. Therefore, Stage 1 concepts will be identified by the Kangaroo.

Each assessment includes three columns that indicate a point system:

  • First column = 1 point (Below stage level)
  • Second column = 2 points (At stage level)
  • Third column = 3 points (Above stage level)

Each column is designed to assess different levels of understanding. For example, in a Stage 1, Year 1 assessment:

  • First column = Kindergarten level questions
  • Second column = Year 1/2 level questions
  • Third column = Year 3 questions (for students working above stage outcomes)

How Students Earn Points:

Students can attempt as many sections as they like but will only earn points for the highest-level question they answer correctly.
Example: If a student answers both the first and second columns correctly, they will receive 2 points from the second column.

Scoring and Interpreting Results:

The total assessment score is based on the second column (at stage level), not the third column. This ensures fairness, as students are not expected to achieve above-stage outcomes, but can demonstrate higher-level thinking.

  • Any score above the middle column total indicates that a student is achieving beyond stage expectations.

Open-Ended Maths Questions:

This section allows students to showcase their understanding in different ways. These responses are not scored with points but are assessed using teacher judgment to determine if a student is working below, at, or above stage level based on their reasoning and explanations.

Encourage students to explain their thinking in detail, especially in the open-ended number section, where they can demonstrate their knowledge without limits and make meaningful connections in mathematics.
